I'm sorry, it's not really worth explaining at the moment. Or rather, it's a long, complicated thing to explain, but like I said, it shouldn't be anything problematic.
[ She'll acknowledge that much, even as she cants her head to consider the question. ]
Jazz, classical, any kind of instrumental music... ah, one of my friends back home had me listen to some rock songs that I really enjoyed? I-- oh.
[ It's their turn to order so she'll do that swiftly. ]
[Of course that only piques his curiosity more, but Haru doesn't sound like she wants to delve any deeper into the subject; and so Eddie shelves it. Does not forget about it, but just shelves it.]
Rock songs...?
[Oop, it's their turn to order, and Eddie blinks owlishly for a moment, realizing he wasn't even looking at the menu as they toddled forward in line. He gives a rather useless uhhhhh when it's his turn, though eventually he just decides on the first thing that sounds good.
They're instructed to take a seat, and their food will be brought to them.]
What kind of rock? That's what I listen to. [Maybe not surprising if one takes a look at him, really.] Metal's my thing. I even had a band.
[ Haru selects a table near the window, taking her seat with a pensive little hum that's more noise than music. ]
I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with the different forms of rock... there was a lot of electric guitar? But you really had a band? What were you called?
[ She isn't going to recognize his band but she is extremely fascinated. ]
[He pulls out a chair across from her, taking a seat and idly rapping his thumbs against the surface of the table.]
Corroded Coffin. It was made up of me and a few others from school -- from the D&D club. Had it going for six whole years, played gigs on Tuesdays for an actual crowd sometimes.
[ Has she ever committed to anything that long? Ballet had only been a few years, as sorely as she misses it. Gardening, perhaps, but that's nowhere near as much a commitment as having a band. ]
Eddie-san, that's amazing! I know you don't have your band here, but nonetheless, I'd love to hear you play sometime!
[Six years, for as long as he was in high school. :) ]
Sure... sure. [He likes it when other people want to hear him play, of course, but there's something about Haru's unabashed enthusiasm that has Eddie rubbing the back of his neck. It's flatteringly embarrassing.] I could play a few solos for you. I was...
[He has a certain one under his belt, doesn't he? The last thing he ever played.]
I was practicing one a lot before I arrived here. Have you ever heard of Metallica?
[ Listen, Ryuji could very well repeat another year it's fine-- ]
Metallica...?
[ Sadly, she's not familiar with the name-- not that Ryuji had ever really told her the names of any of the songs he'd had her listen to, let alone who the artists had been. ]
I'm sorry, I'm afraid I haven't. I'm still fairly new to the music in general.
[Oh man. A Metallica newbie. No, not even that, a Metallica uninitiated. What else could he have her listen to...? Ah, wait, he's getting ahead of himself.]
Then we should hit up a record shop around here. Surely hell still has those, and... if I can find something that I recognize, I'll bring it back to the apartment and we can have a listen. Together.
And if you hate it, then you can tell me, and we'll try to figure out what kind of bands you might actually like, anyway.
That's fine, but please don't go out of your way for my account...
[ He's already being kind enough to help educate her in the world of. Metal? Metallica? He doesn't have to help her find a band she actually likes, if for some reason it isn't to her tastes. ]
It wouldn't be going out of my way. I'd wanna do it even if you weren't a roommate, so it's no skin off of my back.
[They're interrupted briefly by the server bringing them their plates and drinks. Eddie just nods a little thanks as they make sure everything looks prepared properly, then leave the duo to their conversation.]
We're going to find you all sorts of new hobbies. [Suddenly, his eyebrows raise.] Oh, shit, I nearly forgot -- I brought you something.
[ She's staring at him in confused surprise, not having expected anything at all, and caught unprepared after thanking the server. She's a little torn between sipping at her lavender coffee to recover from looking so owlish or just committing to being invested in whatever the heck he's got going on, but she's already at this point, so might as well not act as though she's completely composed and casual. ]
[With a grin. Whatever he’s digging out of his pockets jostle together with a plastic-y noise, and once he unearths it, it’s clear to see why. It’s a set of dice, nestled neatly in a clear plastic box. He gives it a little shake, then plants it down on the table right between them.]
Remember when I asked about what color you liked? Well, I got you some dice to match — for, you know, D&D.
[A shrug.]
Or, I mean, it doesn’t have to be for that. But I figured I should get you something to show my thanks for even considering me as a potential roommate. So… [Gestures at the dice.] There you go.
[ it's not a gasp, or an exclamation. It's more of a quiet, involuntary noise of surprise and then Haru delicately picks up the little box and brings it closer to examine the dice. Pink and purple... he'd really-- ]
I hope, [ she says very softly-- ]
I hope, Eddie-san, that you're not planning on not teaching me. I was committed to learning before I even knew you'd be buying me such a wonderful gift.
[His eyes are settled on her face, trying to read her reaction, trying to see if she really does like it or she's just playing at being polite. He thinks he chose well; and if she's still willing to learn how to play, it doesn't look like he was just assuming too much.]
You really think it's wonderful?
[That makes him glad, makes his smile widen more.]
No, no, I definitely want to teach you. I just... I don't know, just giving you one more chance to back out if you think it's too weird or whatever. I get real into this stuff.
I think it's good to have something you feel so passionate about. And I can't say for certain whether I would consider it strange or not without actually learning more about it.
[ She's definitely going to give it a try!! But she gives him a bright smile. ]
But really, thank you. These are lovely-- I mean that.
[Lifts his mug--he ordered coffee, and it steams--to his face, hiding the curve of his smile, but it's still visible in his eyes. Takes a sip.]
I'm glad you like them. Like I said, it's the least I can do since you've been so nice to me since I've arrived. I got myself a set, too. Of dice, I mean -- red and black. Not exactly matchies, but pink and purple didn't really suit me.
Red and black is also a very nice color scheme. [ Joker swears by it. ]
And I believe I already said this, or if I haven't, I should have, but you don't owe me anything. I got the chance to get to know you better, which is payment enough.
Of course, I think that opportunity will only increase, given the living situation, if I've yet to frighten you off.
[Haru’s the closest thing he has to a friend in this place. He’s already Pavlov’d himself into associating her with feeling more comfortable in a foreign environment.]
As long as you don’t come at me with that grenade launcher someday, I’d say we’re set.
